The Light

Holly is at the seashore for two weeks with her four children. Last night she sent photos of the little boys fishing at sunset. The magical beach sunset fishing hour.

In that space between darkness and light~~dusk, the air warms. The water warms. We hold onto the last light easily as our eyes adjust with the lowering levels of the sun. We know, all too soon, that our wet-clothed bodies will start to shiver, and darkness will prevail.

Yet darkness, as its own entity doesn't exist. Darkness can only be with an absence or withdrawal of light. You can't walk into a room and turn off the darkness, you turn off the light. Only then does darkness ensue.

Light and truth go hand in hand. So darkness, or an absence of light could go hand in hand with "false." Or deception, misunderstanding, lies.

Light must have a source. A battery, a switch, a generator. The sun. Again, night is only dark because of the absence of the sun. Darkness is only evil because of the absence of the Son.

When I first saw the photos sent to the family by text, I wondered, where did they get the fishing poles? I mind-scanned the beach toy storage bin. No fishing poles. The closets. No. Did she bring them? No, she is not a fisherman.

Following the photos, Holly writes: "Bless the good people in the world...Theo and Seb are learning to fish."

Ah, it is a stranger on the beach who saw the boys had an interest. A stranger on the beach who is light and care. A stranger on the beach who becomes a sunset fishing friend.

I reply to my family: May we be the good people too.

The light.
