Our vacations are loosely planned. This doesn't mean that we hop in the car and start driving with fate at the wheel. We don't stand at the airport and throw a dart at the destination board. Vacations are planned for a specific destination and time. We often have plane tickets six months in advance. We rent our summer vacation home a year in advance.
We are well planned, but once we get there, we are free to lounge, to swim, to sleep, to play, to read, to ride, with the roll of time.
In the beginning of one of our daughter's marriage, her husband would ask the crowd, "What's the plan?"
I would answer, "The plan is that there is no plan!" He came from a family that always had a structured vacation. This hike on this day; this movie right after; dinner at this restaurant, and most recently, on one night was an outdoor move followed by a glow stick maze--and not to mention the pies, cookies, and cakes the mother/grandmother made for each day.
Sigh. No wonder he always wanted to know the plan.
Aside from the essentials, we are not planners.
Vacation is a vacation from plans.
Thus our time is subject to the whims of spirit and heart.
"It's peach season in the south!" I declare.
So we went on a hunt for a peach stand in the country. Tanner had found one on a government website. But alas, the agricultural stand wasn't open. We headed for the next best place: Lowe's grocery store. It is a mega grocery in the middle of what seems to be nowhere but isn't. It's where people take pride in the work they do. They must be treated well and given some autonomy to do their jobs with such pride. That's another thing to write about.
We indeed found peaches and cream and graham crackers and PJ came home to build a spontaneous peach pie. It was gone after dinner.
Today is our last day at the lake, so what will we do?
Live and play blissfully without a plan.
