Together

Please don't shy away from family, especially from extended family, because you are the one with the full-length-leg tattoo, the nose rings, the one who raises snakes. Please come to the birthday party with your same sex partner, with your beliefs formed in the age of Aquarius. Come to my house and explain what transgender means and help us understand. Bring your own beer if we don't serve alcohol. Please drive off on your Harley Davidson wearing your embossed leather jacket.

We need you. Our children need you.

Different beliefs, circumstances, and lifestyles are just that-- different. They are not chasms, fight'in words, reasons to fear. The bonds that bring us together are greater than those that keep us apart.

Our children need to recognize that lifestyles and choices are different; that drug and alcohol abuse are bad, but the people are not.

I am forever thankful to my sisters, to my father. Though their lifestyles were different from mine, their principles different from what I taught, my daughters loved their aunts, they adored and loved their grandfather.

My daughters learned to love people, because of family who were always a part of their lives. Regardless.

When I respect and value your life, it is natural for you to find the same acceptance and love for mine. There is no need to push your agenda, persuade my children, for me to preach the good word.  The tension is gone, judgement is a distant and regrettable thought; we become more than a genetic family. Together we make the world a better place, we make a better life. We are part of a better story.
