Truly, the shared experience of a book can be as binding as marriage or as tight as the siblings who come from that marriage.
What happens when you share many books in a concentrated period of time?
Last year, our AP (advanced placement) Literature and Language class consisted of five lovely young ladies. Nary a male. In previous years, we've had more males than females, or a more balanced male/female group.
When the year ended, we couldn't quite let go, so the girls chose a book and we arranged the date for our post AP book club.
The first try at the end of summer, failed. The second try worked, and this morning we gathered for lemon-creme filled crepes, berries, and a massive omelet that looked like Jabba the Hutt in a pan. We gathered too, to catch up on their post high school lives.
The book we'd been trying to gather for, was Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist, a fable of sorts, about life and the pursuit of life's treasures. It was a broad departure from the canon of classical literature we'd read in our literature and writing class.
We began the discussion by telling where we were while reading the book. Yuri was traveling alone on a train through the Korean countryside to visit relatives she hadn't seen in years. I pictured her in a posture of reflection, gathering the wisdom of the book and contemplating in her pastoral surroundings.
Sarah read on the plane, on her first trip to Europe. I happened to be on the same plane. We took a photo of us in Amsterdam--a first. I picture her young and impressionable self, absorbing the story and its influence on how she experienced the old world.
Most of us were home while reading and brought a much less exotic tale to our gathering.
Unfortunately, we only made a dent into the book's content before one had to depart for a cousin's wedding, another's ride came for her, but the lack of time left us dissatisfied, and so we arranged for the second annual post AP book club meeting to be held in August of 2018.
This time the read has a truly classic calling: Emily Bronte's only novel, Wuthering Heights.
